DRUMMOND Norman Brougham

Norman Brougham Drummond & Elsie Drummond
Norman was the chemist at Gnowangerup for several years.
Norman was born in Perth on 12 March 1895. His father was Mr Maurice Brougham Drummond known as "Brough; Norman's mother was Mabel Ethel Daisy Elspeth (nee Allison) who was known as "Day".
Norman enlisted in WWI on in 1915 and was noted as a single man aged 20 years.
He was attached to the 36th Heavy Artillery Group and the Royal Australian Garrison Artillery as a Gunner/Bombadier. (Sern No. 294)
Norman departed in July 1915, and was a signal and wireless operator as well as a gunner.

Norman married Elsie when he returned from WW1 on 27 April 1919.
 It is presumed they met and married in England, and both came to Gnowangerup upon their arrival in Western Australia as soon as possible after the War.
Norman worked as the chemist at Gnowangerup for many years. "Over the railway line, now removed, was Lou Smith's grocery store, then a Chemist shop in my memory run I G Royal followed by N.B. Drummond and several others since their time". (Ron Whyatt)
The couple had a son John.
Norman and Elsie were still living in Gnowangerup in 1948, later retiring to Cottesloe.

 
 Photo: Originally the Chemist was in the left hand side of the older building, then it took up the entire building, later a new building was erected on the left.

During his years in the town Norman helped out at the Gnowangerup Boy Scout Troop No. 51 teaching semaphore.
He was the announcer at the Interschool Athletic Carnivals and a member of the local Repertory Club.
Norman was also a member of the RSL and later of the VDC in Gnowangerup during WWII.
He passed away in Cottesloe in 1964 aged 68 and is buried at Karrakatta.
